Tick, Tock….Marleau’s on the Clock…

June 18th, 2008 by cantstopthegrier

Darren Dreger is reporting that the Sharks and Canucks could be talking trade involving Marleau and Ryan Kesler. I’m assuming this deal would also include Vancouver’s #10 pick in the draft on Friday. This deal makes perfect sense for Vancouver, they desperately need a top flight forward to play on a team that struggles to score goals. They have the cap room, they need a make over - they need a Marleau type player.

Why does this make sense for San Jose? Kesler isn’t a great player, but he’s good. He’s 23, he’s signed for two more years at 1.75M per and he can play center or wing on the 2nd or 3rd line. He’s got decent size and with Pavelski and Seto, could be a smooth addition by Doug Wilson. It frees up the cash to resign Brian Campbell, which I think has been DW’s priority since the season ended AND the Sharks can get an exciting, young player in a very deep draft. I’ve gone on the record as being a fan of Kyle Beach - even though some hockey people think he’s too much of a loose cannon, I think the Sharks need to have a player like this and he’s worth the risk. Colin Wilson could be there at #10 as well, another DW type player who has excelled at the college game and could contribute on the big club in two years.

What do you think?

It’s only a decent trade if Campbell is signed. Kinda like the McDonald-Weight deal last year with the Ducks. Since the Ducks could bring Niedermayer back, it wasn’t a horrible trade for them. But if the Sharks just do it to dump salary, I’d be very disappointed.

The Dreger article mentioned a rumor from last year involving Kesler.

Then why did Dreger include it in this article? I read it as the deal was discussed once, so it could be revisited again.

I’m puzzled and disturbed by all the trade talk surrounding Marleau. I understand that he has a sizeable contract and that he’s been a tad inconsistent over the years. However, he stepped up his game big time in last year’s playoffs and that’s gotta account for something. He stepped up while others (Thornton, Campbell, etc) shrunk when it really counted. Yet, the Sharks are looking to get rid of Marleau in order to resign the overrated Campbell? It doesn’t make sense.

What of the rumour that the Sharks will trade the rights to Campbell?
Do his rights alone get them into the first round (assuming which ever team his rights get traded to has the cap room to immediately sign BC for his asking price)?
Could the blockbuster with CBJ really involve Campbell instead of Marleau?

I would think that Campbell’s rights would be worth a conditional pick in 2009 but that DW isn’t trading them - I still think they are working on a deal. Campbell’s UFA rights on its own certainly wouldn’t be enough to get a first rounder anyways.

It’s Marleau or Michalek, it appears from rumors. We’ll see….I am sticking to DW gets Campbell done and somehow gets a first rounder today.

Have you heard that plan B is Kubina? His no-trade clause has a window starting today in which he cannot veto any movement. And he apparently did veto a trade to SJ at the deadline. Could a rights to Campbell for Kubina swap be in order?

I can’t imagine why DW would want to bring in a guy that already said he didn’t want to come here. For better or worse, I think DW thinks he can sign Campbell. That means if he’s gone, it’s after July 1.
