Dammit, So Close

November 5th, 2008 by Mike

I really went out on a limb yesterday, predicting a 3+ goal win over a team that’s only given up 2.4 goals per game while scoring 2.9.  And I almost looked like a genius.  Instead, I’ll have to settle for extraordinarily intelligent.  I was right that the Sharks played a patient game and eventually cracked the trap.  There were so many times the Sharks could have scored the fourth goal, but my disappointment at not being inducted into the pantheon of Great Calls is offset by yet another impressive Sharks effort.  I’ll take it.

All that and more discussed on the recent DOH podcast, and other issues discussed on last week’s ChompTalk radio show.

I’m sure this isn’t a very popular opinion, but I’m getting somewhat annoyed at how Grier has been playing in the offensive zone. He is still coasting into corners rather than skating hard and battling for the puck. If he gets his stick on the puck, he will automatically dump it to the net regardless of what the smart, puck-possession play might be. Sometimes it’s more of a pass to the goaltender than an actual shot!

No one can argue with his defensive/penalty kill/puck clearing abilities. He’s great in those areas, but he needs to step up his offensive awareness.

Yeah, 9 points in 13 games and 2 goals in the last 4… blah, blah. I’m not talking about the numbers; I’m talking about the style of play. Anyway… that 1st goal was a lucky backhand that happened to be screened. The other was Clowe’s shot that went off Grier’s foot. Not exactly heads-up plays.

For me, I love his defense so much, that any offense we get out of him is a bonus. I just laugh it off when he gets the puck on a “breakaway”: “Oh here goes Mr. Slowpoke. Not expecting much out of this.” And I say stuff like that with love. :D

We were just talking the other night that if Grier had any kind of a shot or accuracy, he would be an All Star.
