Let the Rumors Fly

June 25th, 2009 by Doug

Check out our latest podcast with special guest, Sharks television commentator Randy Hahn. Check it out!

The Sharks hit the rumor mill this morning when Darren Dreger reported that Doug Wilson has had serious discussions about moving RFA Ryane Clowe with both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Philadelphia Flyers. As expected, Doug Wilson’s asking price is high for Clowe, with the Leafs #9 pick and Scott Hartnell and young sniper Claude Giroux as the names that have surfaced.

Dreger doesn’t usually say something unless it has some substance, so this is a pretty solid clue that the Sharks are looking to make some pretty major changes. So far, according to Dreger, the Flyers and Leafs have balked at the asking price - but if they reconsider, how would you feel about the potential return? We know what Scott Hartnell is - a real son of a bitch who is the kind of player we could hope Clowe develops into. He scored 30 goals last year and has scored 20+ since 2005. He can also instigate with the best of them, he’s no softy. Does he make dumb ass plays sometimes? Yes (see this clip of him tossing his glove at Ryan Malone on a break away) but the Sharks need this type of guy badly. As for Giroux, this kid can flat out score and is signed at .9M until 2011. He could replace Michalek immediately and make him instant trade bait. His affordability makes it less likely the Flyers, who are in salary cap hell, will be likely to move him. I think a Hartnell for Clowe deal makes more sense.

24 hours from getting some potential answers.

Count me as surprised by these rumors. Of all people during the last two seasons of playoff runs, Clowe would be the last guy I would expect to get traded.

If trading Clowe for whoever are the changes DW is considering, I’d like to know what kinds of things DW is smoking these days.

I feel like this is kinda like a game of chicken between Burke and DW and we’ll see who blinks first in the next 24 hours. I could see this deal going through, but only if this phantom offer for Kaberle nets picks and the Leaf’s pick at 7 isn’t part of the deal.

No way Burke trades the 7th overall for Clowe. It just doesn’t make sense. But just wondering what the Rob Blake situation is? Are the Sharks going to re-sign him? If not, here is some speculation. What if the the Kaberle offer and the Leafs interest in Clowe was linked? What if it was Clowe and something for Kaberle? Would that make sense from a Sharks point of view? Just undertaking some baseless speculation here.

A Philly news outlet says that JBo has some interest in us. He sure would be the no. 2 d-man we want.

    Dreger’s latest Twitter post:

Tor, Philly, Minny and LA closing in on Ryane Clowe. SJ still trying to sign him.

  7. By Mike on Jun 26, 2009

I’m sure JBo would be interested in the Sharks- if we wanted to pay him $7.5M per.

And since Clowe is still RFA, I’m very curious as to what MIN and LAK are offering…

  8. By bcsteve on Jun 26, 2009

Is there any merit to the notion that even if we made a run at JBo, we couldn’t pay him more than Boyle, our no. 1 d-man, who makes 6.67 per? I know we didn’t negotiate the Boyle contract, but you’ll hear about this kind of situation occaisionally. Just a thought…

Also, Clowe said he wants to stay in SJ, and his/his agent’s comments kinda seemed like a hometown discount was possible. I feel like if we sign him, it’s on the condition he stays because he has the leverage right now. Otherwise, he could drag his feet and get his rights traded or hold out for an offer sheet.

I’m still of the opinion that it is our offense that needs major changes, and if we were to sign/trade another all-star into San Jose, I hope it’s a forward.

In other words, I’m not all into JBo to San Jose.

So long, Pronger… you are a douche, now you can live among your people in Philly.

If ever a city and player deserved each other it was Philly and Pronger…

Wathcing this draft was like watching playoffs after round 1. Very depressing to see no action by our team but at least we’re not Flyers who might have traded away the future of their franchise for 1 year of Pronger.
