So Who Doesn’t Suck?

November 2nd, 2009 by Mike

As Jerry said in the last thread- the Sharks.  They’ve strung together three good wins in a row- that’s wins against two of the top teams in the West points-wise (Colorado and L.A.) and a beatdown win on the road against a struggling Carolina team.  And having Eric Staal leave the game early on Sunday certainly didn’t hurt.

Now we just got word that Nabokov was named the third NHL Star of the Week.  Even though Nabby got (and deserves) kudos, I still want to see more Thomas Greiss.  The conventional wisdom is that Nabby won one or more of those games last week for the Sharks, but I wouldn’t mind seeing that put to the test.  My new fantasy hero Andrew Raycroft pitched a shutout last night for the Canucks, so even backups can have a good game now and again.  As Doug has said before, Nabby generally misses a little time each year, so do we really want Greiss riding the pine for weeks before he finally gets the call?  Could McLellan get freaky again and start Greiss on the second half of the back-to-back this week, that is, against Detroit?

Speaking of that game, the Canucks shut down the Avs, who really looked rather ordinary to me last week against the Sharks.  Were it not for Craig Anderson, it would have been much worse for Colorado.  Could it be this team is regressing back to where we thought they’d be?  Some good young players, but not enough horses to get to the playoffs.   After Matt Duschene and Wojtek Wolski and… uh… Ryan O’Reilly (?) there are not a ton of bright spots in the lineup.

And I hope to say here that Ryane Clowe doesn’t suck after three good games (shootout winner against LA, finally a goal against the Avs, and two assists yesterday), but it’s still a little soon.  We all hoped he’d snap out of it, and it appears he has, but let’s see 10 games of good play before the Newfoundlander gets off the hook.  I have to say, “The Newfoundlander” wouldn’t be a bad nickname, but it does remind one of Christopher Lambert and one of the worst sequels of all time.

As has been said on this blog before by many, I think Colorado is nothing with out Anderson. They have some good young talent, but that is really all they have…

I had this thought friday night… I could see Colorado cool off and still make the playoffs in a low 7-8 seed. Yes, it’s WAY EARLY… but… Could this be the Sharks first round opponent…hmmm…

    Hey,

Good article, but you missed Stastny as a bright spot on Colorado…

    BCapp,

    Right you are.

6 in a row, looks like we’re losing Blake for a little while, we getting a podcast tonight?

crappy non-whistle by the ref last night. Brutal. Nabby loses the shut out and they lose the extra pt… Perhaps a little Joe Lewis mojo..?

  7. By WingsFanInSharkLand on Nov 6, 2009

    I knew that was coming.

Can you really say that he would have had a shutout if they blew the whistle on that one play? Do the Wings (and Sharks for that matter) do everything exactly the same the rest of the way? I’m not saying it should have been a goal or that the Wings would have scored after that if they were still down 1-0, but that one call (4 minutes past the midway point) wasn’t the entire game. It was a pretty evenly matched contest and could have gone either way.

By the way, it’s Joe Louis.

Bit of bad luck on that goal to be sure, but I thought the Sharks got lucky in that they didn’t give up 4 or 5 in the third to the Wings. Detroit looked like the class of the west for most of that game, with the Sharks barely able to keep up. That point we got was a gift.

  9. By WingsFanInSharkLand on Nov 6, 2009

Always the cynic, Mike. Yeah, Detroit had some good chances in the third but I don’t know that I would agree that that point was a gift. The goaltending on both sides is what kept the scoring so low. It could have just as easily been 3-0 SJ going into the third. It’s not like Osgood had a cake walk.

    Dear Sharks,

Please put a hurt on Cindy Crosby tomorrow.

    Thanks.

Hehe, I pronounce it “realist.” Agreed that goaltending was great on both sides, but maybe it’s just my defeatist attitide where the Wings are concerned, but it seems Zetterberg and Datsyuk generated more and higher quality scoring chances (by far) in the latter two periods.

  11. By Tom on Nov 6, 2009

I agree with Mike. I though the wings were the better team in the last two periods. Given that I still believe very strongly that Nabby would have had the SO…

oh and wingsfan… my one little post about the non-whistle is nothing compared to the phantom-off-sides-by-Marleau rants that ensued after last year.

thanks for the spelling edit though.. Maybe you can edit this too.

    Pavel can Dat-suk-my-balls…

    is that correct?

Relax, killer. I’m not the grammar police. You can have all the bad grammar you want otherwise. I just couldn’t let that one slide :-)

Again, there’s no way you can say that he for sure would have had a shutout if not for that one call. The strength of your beliefs has nothing to do with it. If that happens with a minute left in the game, then I’d agree with you. You’ve already said that the Wings were the better team later in the game though. That’s the point. It’s not like the Sharks were skating in circles around the Wings and that was their only chance to tie it up.

Marleau was totally off-sides. That’s a joke. Take it as such. I know Wings fans are very much guilty about griping over calls/non-calls. Such is the nature of sports fans.

You can make all the suck my balls comments you want. I don’t go there. Plus, Pavel’s too busy polishing his rings and trophies anyway…..

    Hugs and kisses,

Here is my point… Would you on this board “discussing the game” had the Wings lost? I doubt it. My comments were to other Sharks fans on a Sharks board.

  14. By WingsFanInSharkLand on Nov 7, 2009

Absolutely. I know Mike and Doug personally. I’ve listed to just about every podcast and this isn’t my first time posting here (Read this if you’d like).

I’m not here just to trash talk or rub the win in your collective faces. If you read what I wrote, you’d notice that not once am I gloating about the win.

Last I checked, there’s no rule that you have to be a Sharks fan to read and comment on this blog. All my comments are on topic and I think that’s all that matters.
